Jerry proves that he can fit in naturally as a banjo player at a Bluegrass festival as he does in the arena with The Dead. Pig in a Pen-Old And In The Way- Pig in a Pen What I love about these songs is that they balance our penchant for regret with our eternal hope for better days to come. Whether along the wharf or through the Mission District, the main character in each of these songs is wandering all alone through an unforgiving world, lost in their own regret. Mission in the Rain – Jerry Garcia Band – November 8th, 1976 Wharf Rat – Grateful Dead – Skull and Roses,Ĭomes a Time – Jerry Garcia – Reflections From the first bass pickup notes, mandolin harmonic, and percussion hits, to the hard stop at the end of “Arabia” (the final song on the record), this album is an amazing journey. This BB King cover is the first song on that album. It’s cliché, but the first time I heard this album, it blew my mind. The Thrill is Gone-Jerry Garcia and David Grisman There were several Jimmy Cliff songs in Jerry’s repertoire.

When explaining jamming to my friends unfamiliar with the style, I tell them it’s all about ‘tension and release”, of which there are many examples here. Jerry often made this the epic climax of the first set. I’ve always imagined this as a thematic play on Charlie Poole’s “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down Blues”. As a 19-year-old deadhead, I adopted this as my personal favorite for a long time.ĭeal- Jerry Garcia Band-August 5th 1990, Greek Theater Add in the philosophical wit of Robert Hunter and you get a song that you can really hold on to and personalize. It’s special to me because many years after I first heard the song, I read Psalm 91, upon which it is based.Ĭascading waterfalls of melody flow from Jerry’s guitar on this one. We know that Jerry loved Gospel because he played so many Gospel songs and the make up of his band was reminiscent of what you might find in Baptist or Pentecostal church on a Sunday morning in the South. Julian Dawson is a British singer-songwriter whom Hopkins in 1994 and collaborated on a song (which you will hear in this program). The music they made together was brilliant at its best, documented in the two-CD set Let It Rock: Jerry Garcia Band, Keystone Berkeley '75 (for which I had the honor of writing the liner notes). Hopkins was the piano player in the first incarnation of the Jerry Garcia Band, which lasted from August 1975 until December 31, 1975. His piano graced recordings by the Beatles ("Revolution," the original rocking' single version), the Rolling Stones (too many to count), The Kinks, Jeff Beck, John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Steve Miller, Jefferson Airplane, and - my excuse for covering him here - the Jerry Garcia Band (Reflections, 1976). Nicky Hopkins (1944-1994) is, in the opinion of many, the greatest session player who ever lived. Part 1 of an interview with Julian Dawson, author of And on Piano.
